Ethiopian Airlines’ recently-acquired Boeing 787-800 Dreamliner dubbed “Africa First” touched down in Accra last Saturday.

The imposing aircraft touched down at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) at exactly 11:04 hrs GMT.

Speaking at a ceremony to welcome the aircraft, Mrs. Doreen Owusu Fianko, Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, said: “It is an endorsement that the airport [KIA] is well-equipped and well managed enough to handle a modern-generation fleet of aircraft, and a further endorsement that KIA is the best airport in Africa.”

She indicated that works are ongoing at KIA to accommodate more aircraft.
The Country Manager of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr. Michael Yared, said: “It [the acquisition of the Dreamliner] means a lot for our customers in Accra as they have peculiar requirements and taste. They definitely deserve one of the most modern means of flying.

“Passengers will also save about 30 minutes of flying time if they travel on our Dreamliner to Addis Ababa to connect with flights to countries in the Middle East and Asia. With the acquisition of the Dreamliner, local businessmen now have a reliable carrier for their business travels to Asia and the Middle East,” he said.

Ethiopian Airlines is the first in the world outside Japan and ahead of any airline in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East to operate the Dreamliner.

The Dreamliner offers passengers greatly enhanced on-board comfort with significantly reduced noise, higher level of humidity, the biggest windows in the sky and a unique lighting system.
The airline plans to rotate its first Dreamliner primarily on its African routes.

After receiving its second Dreamliner, Ethiopian plans to deploy the aircraft on its Washington D.C. route starting from mid-September 2012.

Ethiopian Airlines, one of the largest and fastest-growing airlines in Africa, made its maiden international flight to Cairo in 1946. With the latest addition of new services to Seychelles, Ethiopian provides dependable services to 65 international destinations spanning four continents.
