Gold Fields has restarted operations at its Tarkwa heap leach facilities in Ghana, after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lifted its suspension on Thursday.

Gold Fields, the EPA and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology agreed that Tarkwa would continue diluting and discharging excess water in a controlled manner until two water treatment plants were constructed.

The company, which is expected to complete construction of the water treatment plants by the end of the year, was required to submit monthly progress reports on the construction to the EPA.

The company estimated a loss of about 15 000 oz of gold production, or 10% of the mine’s quarterly production, since it closed its heap leach facilities on July 16 in compliance with an EPA directive.

Tarkwa’s carbon-in-leach plant, which produces about 75% of the gold at the mine, was not affected.
