Institute To Help Train Financial Journalists

A business solutions provider, Development Institute of Business Solutions (DIBS), is to train business and financial journalists on the International Certificate in Banking and Risk Regulation (ICBRR) as part of measures aimed at strengthening business reporting in the country.

The five-day training programme is to take place from August 27-31, 2012 at the Cleaver House in Accra.

The DIBS is organising the training in collaboration with the Global Association of Risk Management (GARP), a USA-based organisation that specialises in professional education and certificate programmes.

The Head of Training at DIBS, Mr Robert Torno, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, added that selected media houses in the country, especially those based in Accra, were expected to nominate representatives for the programme.

He said the training would help equip journalists with basic knowledge in finance to enable them face emerging challenges in their area of reportage.

“Most financial journalists are journalists first and finance specialists second,” he said, noting that such a development made it difficult for the reporters to accurately report issues in the sector to the general public.

He was, however, optimistic that the ICBRR programme would help “give them solid theoretical and practical as they related to the financial services industry.

“It will help them to understand and interpret bank results, new developments and regulatory changes better,” Mr Torno added.
