The Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Mr. Anthony Fofie, has launched the 2012 Cocoa Producers Alliance (COPAL) Day celebration with a call on Ghanaians to promote the consumption of cocoa for its enormous health benefits.

He said the health benefits derived from the consumption of cocoa have been scientifically proven and there is evidence that the anti-oxidants it contains boost the body’s system and helps to control blood pressure.

COPAL instituted the celebration to be marked on October 1 each year to create awareness of the health benefits of cocoa and to promote its consumption.

Mr. Fofie said the celebration on the theme “Cocoa Consumption for Healthier Life and Sustainable Economy”, will begin with pre-celebration activities including a radio talk show, health outreach, football gala competition, quiz competition and a film show from 28th to 30th September.

He said Agona Swedruin the Central Region will host the main event on October 1 to climax activities of the COPAL Day, and planned activities include a health walk, grand durbar of chiefs, exhibition of cocoa products and cocoa by-products.

Mr. Fofie also announced that awards will be given to some personalities who have contributed to the promotion of cocoa consumption in the country.

The awards include Journalists and individuals who have contributed to the promotion of cocoa consumption, and the most promising young cocoa farmer.

A member of the board of directors of COCOBOD, Mrs. Afriyie Haffar who chaired the launching ceremony, encouraged the public to consume more cocoa to keep healthy.

She said chocolate contains more than 300 healthful chemicals, and has been the subject of a number of studies by universities and other scientific organisations.
